"My wife and I planned to move to the Machias area and so we spent some days viewing towns, properties and the general area. Our base of operations was The Captain Cates Bed & Breakfast in Machiasport. We immediately were made to feel at home by Mary and Rick, whose transplanted Southern manner and humor put us in a great frame of mind. We took two rooms on the second floor, one for my wife, 20 month old daughter and me and the other for our 10 year old daughter and 7 year old son. The rooms were cozy and charming, the linens crisp and inviting, the bathroom sparkling and the view of the river lovely. Perhaps our favorite feature was breakfast. The Bury's serve a bountiful and delicious meal with all the fixings. Warm, spotless, comfortable and oozing Victorian charm, The Captain Cates is a can't miss haven for any traveler Downeast."

"Captain Cates Bed and Breakfast is nestled in historic Machiasport, overlooking the Machias River. Beautiful views and pampered rooms are only the beginning of the hospitality and service that the Burys provide. A delightful, relaxing Maine stay can be found at Captain Cates B&B."- Kyle

"We stayed 3 nights at Captain Cates in early April 2007. We found the rooms and bath to be wonderful. The use of the house and the historic information provided were outstanding. Rick and Mary were delightful to spend time with and we looked forward to breakfast each morning as it was always great. We will return there as often as we can and have recommended it to our friends. "- Paul & Sandy

"I have thoroughly enjoyed each time I have stayed at Captain Cates, and look forward to future visits. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The house is very relaxing, and wonderfully decorated. "

"My wife and I stayed here last April when we were house-hunting. The Victorian decor was amazing and the rooms were immaculate; ours had a lovely view of the river. Rick and Mary were extremely helpful, even offering to refund our last night's stay when we told them we were driving all the way up to Arostook, as well as offering directions. It's a great place to visit if you just want some peace and quiet and a chance to curl up next to your significant other. Would definitely recommend! "- JT and Sherre

"We have been coming to the Captain Cates B & B since it first opened 9 years ago. This charming B & B is tastefully decorated to reflect the Victorian era, is "squeaky clean", and serves wonderful breakfasts. We love to relax on the front lawn on the swinging settee which overlooks the Machias River and watch the bald eagles flying to their nesting "younguns". We much enjoy meeting guests from "away" as they arrive and chatting with them during the leisurely breakfasts. We highly recommend the Cap't. Cates B & B. "

From MSNBC:

"Save serious cash at secluded Maine beach
Prefer to get away from it all and disconnect from the world on a secluded beach somewhere? We suggest you head to the northeastern seashore gem in Maine, the remote beach of Roque Bluffs located 75 miles northeast of Bar Harbor. Accessed through blueberry barrens, dense stands of boreal fir trees and a thicket of fragrant beach roses, this scenic spot features a freshwater kettle pond and an ocean-facing pebble beach with pure cobalt waters. This summer, you can enjoy the solitude of this special locale while staying at Captain Cates B&B in the nearby village of Machiasport. This cozy inn offers all the Down East hospitality of a genuine old Captain’s house plus unbeatably low rates to boot. Case in point: the antique-flavored rooms here at the height of the peak season sell for just $95/night, with breakfast."
